Your Earth's Systems unit just got a little easier with these ready-to-go teacher presentation slides (speaker notes included), student note-taking packet, and partner activity! I incorporated beautiful real life photos for students to use as evidence for weathering, erosion, and deposition with plenty of examples and an optional teacher-led demonstration. There is no prep necessary!

Teacher Presentation Slides:

14 slides that define the processes of weathering, erosion, and deposition and provide examples of each. Types of weathering are included as well as different forces that cause erosion and real life examples of each process.

Student Notes Packet:

The notes packet is a fill-in-the-blank style for middle grades and is a great resource for students to have available to review for a quiz or test. Students will follow along with the teacher PowerPoint and fill in the appropriate answers. A version with all the blanks filled in is also included.

Partner Activity (Around the Room):

In this activity, students will work with a partner to identify the processes of weathering, erosion, and deposition at work in real life pictures. They will use evidence from the photographs to explain how earth's surface is changing and identify which process is at work! Teachers can tape photos to the wall so students have an opportunity to get out of their chairs for this activity.

NGSS Alignment:

4-ESS2-1. Make observations and/or measurements to provide evidence of the effects of weathering or the rate of erosion by water, ice, wind, or vegetation.

4-ESS2-2

Analyze and interpret data from maps to describe patterns of Earth’s features. Maps can include topographic maps of Earth’s land and ocean floor, as well as maps of the locations of mountains, continental boundaries, volcanoes, and earthquakes.

ESS2.A: Earth Materials and Systems

  • Rainfall helps to shape the land and affects the types of living things found in a region. Water, ice, wind, living organisms, and gravity break rocks, soils, and sediments into smaller particles and move them around.
